Steve Tompkins, Founder of the Artemis Project and Managing Director of Artemis Land Management Services
As I approached the end of my 36-year career in the Royal Marines, I discovered my passion for Land and Wildlife Management, particularly in deer management. With many years of experience in the natural environment and a lifelong enjoyment of working outdoors in nature, I realised that the rural sector was the ideal choice for pursuing my next vocation in life.
Deer management requires dedication, discipline, physical resilience and significant effort, all qualities I find challenging and rewarding. Spending early mornings and late evenings in the woods, moorland, and high mountains of Great Britain managing deer, tests me just as much as when serving within the Royal Marines. This, combined with meeting and working with some of the best and most diverse people within the UK, from Cornishman to Highlanders and everyone in between, makes me profoundly privileged.
For several reasons, gaining a foothold in the rural sector has been challenging. This experience was the inspiration to form Project Artemis Royal Marines, a volunteer group to teach, train and professionally develop Royal Marines (Serving and Veteran) within deer management across the UK. With the initial concept proven, the interest and demand were there for Project Artemis Royal Marines to evolve to support the Tri-Service (Serving and Veteran) and became Project Artemis RM.
The Project Artemis RM concept was proven further and evolved yet again to become a commercial enterprise, achieving commercial independence to deliver the core philanthropic outputs of training, providing work experience, assisting with connections and references to deliver Suitably Qualified and Experienced Personnel (SQEP) that can compete effectively for employment within the rural sector.
Artemis Land Management Services (Artemis LMS) was born after 6 years of experimentation on October 1, 2024.
To be able to offer a pathway into deer management, where previously there wasn't, and to see Royal Marines and Service Personnel go on to flourish within Land & Wildlife management gives me a great sense of worth.
"Re-connecting Service Personnel with the Countryside they serve" is my aim, and every day remains a school day as we seek to continue serving the nation as land and wildlife managers."

"Re-connecting Service Personnel with the Countryside they serve" is my aim, and every day remains a school day as we seek to continue serving the nation as land and wildlife managers.
Artemis LMS brings together UK Armed Forces members—serving personnel, veterans, and those in the Recovery Pathway—with local community members, including ecologists, deer managers, and financial experts. This collaborative approach provides essential support and expertise for success in the rural sector while promoting unity between the Armed Forces and local communities.
"United We Conquer"
The transition challenges faced by Armed Forces personnel, especially Royal Marines, are significant due to lengthy deployment cycles that hinder engagement in the rural sector. Obtaining certifications like a Fire Arms Certificate (FAC) and building relationships with landowners often requires stability that service members lack. Artemis LMS addresses these issues by providing a structured pathway into the rural sector, facilitating essential connections, access to land, and mentorship. This initiative supports their transition and allows them to continue serving the nation in a new capacity.
